As everyone who lives an alternative lifestyle will already know, our beloved Camden Town is undergoing major changes – and not for the better. It's long since been our spiritual home, the diversity of its visitors and inhabitants and the richness of its unorthodox culture have made it the place to be for many years. Major redevelopment of the various popular markets is taking place, including the world famous Stables Market, Camden Lock Market, Camden Canal Market and Inverness Street Market. Whilst the developers and Camden Council say this refurbishment will "clean up" the area, they don't seem to realise that the very essence of Camden Town is due in part to its "grunginess". But sadly, it's a fait accomplis. We'll be bringing you news and updates relating to Camden Town and its vivid culture and social life. We don't want this part of town to become another clone of Kensington High Street, the Kings Road and Carnaby Street – all previously Bohemian meccas which have since been taken over by the "big boys". Let's keep Camden Town for all us alternative folk – it's our last bastion of non-conformism!
CAMDEN TOWN FIRE As you may have heard, a major fire broke out in Camden Town on Saturday 9th February 2008 – it centred mainly around the Camden Canal Market area and caused major damage to the Hawley Arms pub, an establishment frequented by many famous people, including Amy Winehouse, Kelly Osbourne, Peaches Geldof, Noel Fielding from the Mighty Boosh, Kirsten Dunst, Liam Gallagher, Nicola Appleton and Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell, to name but a few. The fire took over 100 firefighters to get the blaze under control over a period of several hours. Thankfully there were no casualties.
